About this workshop

Scaling: The Key to Better Conversations is a live 2-hour practical workshop for driver trainers, ADIs, PDIs and instructor trainers.

Scaling is not simply asking someone to give something a number out of ten. The professional value lies in exploring what sits behind that number, and using scaling to facilitate a meaningful coaching conversation.

A structured coaching approach

This is a structured, evidence-led coaching approach. It's not traditional Q&A. It's not "What did you do wrong?" followed by silence and excuses. Scaling helps your pupils evaluate themselves honestly, identify what's working, recognise risk, and decide their own path forward.

In this workshop, you'll learn exactly how to help your learners:

  • Evaluate themselves positively, moving away from shame-based feedback
  • Identify what worked well and why, building on strengths rather than dwelling on faults
  • Recognise risk and near misses through structured reflection; they spot the danger, not you
  • Decide what they would choose to do differently next time. Their decision, their ownership.
  • Identify their own practical remedies, solutions they've created themselves
  • Take genuine ownership of their progress, because when they say it, they act on it

The shift

From: Instructor-led correction, repeated explanations, fault-based debriefs, silence, waiting to be told.

To: Evidence-led reflection, future-focused improvement, shared conversation, engagement, genuine ownership.

Telling doesn't create behavioural change. Self-realisation does.

What you'll walk away with

  • Know exactly how to respond when learners aren't being honest with themselves without creating defensiveness
  • Structure sessions that build real self-evaluation, not excuses and shrugging
  • Stop over-explaining the same things because they're doing the thinking now
  • Create actual engagement where pupils speak up about what they know and what they're thinking
  • Get learners thinking independently; they recognise risk, they decide solutions, they own their progress

This is a practical skills workshop. You can use scaling in your very next session.

Workshop details

  • 2 hours, live on Zoom
