I wrote this (added below) in 2022. I was already working on the Speed Related Course I am launching now.

It has taken all this time … not because I don’t understand what to include, but how do I make it accessible to ADI or PDI Trainers?

I tried to squeeze it into 2 or 3 hour workshops (like the other ones I developed) but it isn’t enough! The subject is too vast!

When I deliver Speed Awareness Courses, people come up almost every time and say:

“Can I get my kids to do this Course?”

“Why isn’t this information out there… on tv or anything?”

“That should be in the highway code that stuff!”

“That speed stuff is scary – I had no idea it was that much!”

I felt bad because there is nowhere to send their Children to get the info that the Trainers gain from delivering these courses. The Courses change, and I’m impressed at the advances the psychologists bring!

When they first started, the speed awareness courses were direct, hard-hitting and lasted the whole day! The videos and slides had shocking content. Studies about shocking content have shown that people experience a limited short-term effect… and practically zero long-term one as a result.

Shock treatment does not work!

Telling does not work!

– People are now supported to explore ideas that will work for them.

– They are given fact-based evidence that helps them form new beliefs about speeding.

– They are respected for being responsible for their own actions.

The course is about marginal speeding offences.

I have learned so much over the years, and it has motivated me to offer my Workshops and my Beyond the Test Course. My Courses are all outside of the ‘norm’ for Instructor CPD.

I put my Gamification Workshop on hold while I focused on this.

My workshops and courses are all based on evidence!

My workshops and courses are geared toward fun and exploration… experiential learning.

I am truly excited about sharing all of this with like-minded Professional Driver Trainers who are desperate to help new drivers stay safe beyond their tests!

Former post November 2022:

Don’t Speed!

Leave a safe gap!

Be considerate as a driver!

It’s a constant challenge for us as ADIs because we really have to work hard to address people’s attitudes. Our presence in the car is a constant ‘behavioural control’!

There are no simple answers of course… no quick fixes!

There are theories about how we ‘intend’ to behave in a certain way… and the contributory factors that help and hinder.

I wish there was more of a movement in our industry to tackle this massive safety issue. HOW can we help someone think about their own choice of speed, and when will they feel tempted to speed?

There are few courses that tackle how to plant the seeds for safer driving for life. I am so glad I paid for my CPD in 2011.

The course planted seeds in me too, it seems. My career has sure blossomed since then!
