Be part of the solution – or part of the problem – you choose!

In my opinion WE as individuals are the ONLY ones capable of making those changes.

The issues begin with how we are all trained to do the job from the outset.

We are trained to be the experts – and then we are ‘shaped’ into trainers that believe we should:

Identify faults

Analyse why that driver made them

And then tell them what the remedy is and tell them step by step what to do!

The biggest issue is that Adults hate being told what to do!

We resent it – fight it – or can’t see the point…. so won’t do it or change! At best we blag it till we are on our own with it!

I am intent on giving ADIs and PDIs other practical Training options.

We need ‘Evidence Based’ training techniques.

I am working on these currently. Other excellent Trainers are too!!

I have been writing my silly Facebook posts on them for years!! (if anyone has seen those?)

We can’t “””””make”””” anyone drive like we tell them.

It is not a failing on our part as a trainer!! You and I try so blooming hard to help!! It is what we are good at!! Helping!!!

The problem is we need better, more adaptable tools than telling someone that the have to check their mirrors, or they must never speed or drink and drive!

Scare tactics are limited and short lived!

The horror stories I was told about what would happen to me if I didn’t hold scissors properly when I walked!! …. and 50 years later I ‘think’ about how I ‘should’ hold scissors when I walk… but never hold them that way when I walk!!! “That will never happen to me” is one of our basic human biases!

Just because I was ‘told’ something like hold scissors this way when you walk, does not mean I do it!!

Driving is the same and worse!!

If we all continued to do what our own Instructors told us to do back in the day – we would not need much training for our own Part 2 tests! We all need quite a bit I think??? 😃

There are a few outstanding ADIs taking us forward with training – but change is hard and …

* Change is a choice! *

I chose change in 2011 when I took on my re-training and worked hard …. very hard on my skills, understanding about humans and how we learn! Since then I have a deeper understanding of the barriers that we all face.

“Don’t be nervous!” is an example of a barrier! Telling someone not to be nervous does not solve the issue.

As I say, Change is a choice.
